Aston Martin Aston Martin has been trickling out little bits of information about its superlative Valkyrie for quite some time, but on Friday the company shared perhaps the most important numbers yet. Aston confirmed that the Valkyrie’s hybrid powertrain will be rated for 1,160 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and 664 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 rpm. Remember, the Valkyrie is planned to be a road-legal car.The astonishing figures are based on combined output from the car’s gasoline engine and electric motor. The former, a 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 built by Cosworth, is rated for 1,000 hp at 10,500 rpm, with a maximum engine speed of 11,100 rpm. Peak torque is rated at 546 pound-feet at 7,000 rpm. Aston said previously the engine weighs only a little over the company’s goal of 200 kilos, or about 441 pounds.Enlarge ImageThe car’s design is just as extreme as its horsepower and torque figures. Aston Martin The remainder of the Valkyrie’s output comes from its hybrid components, with an electric motor from Integral Powertrain Ltd and batteries from Rimac. The motor delivers 160 horsepower and 206 lb-ft alone, with supplements the V12 and delivering those headlining combined output figures. As a refresher, the Valkyrie is being co-developed by Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies. Though intended to be emissions-compliant and legal for road use, Aston is also going to offer a Valkyrie AMR Pro version for track use, which will weigh just 2,220 pounds and have a claimed 2,200 pounds of aerodynamic downforce. Just 25 will be built, whereas the standard road-ready Valkyrie will be limited to 150 units. With the powertrain details confirmed, Aston Martin says it is now beginning to build the first physical test prototypes of the Valkyrie. We can’t wait to see and hear the wild hypercar being put through its paces on the track — especially given how wild that V12 engine sounds on its own. Armed Forces Division congratulates prime minister Sheikh Hasina for her landslide victory in the 11th parliamentary election at her official Ganabhaban residence on Wednesday. Photo: PIDMentioning that her party wanted a strong opposition through the 11th general elections, Awami League president prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said the possibility of such an opposition diminishes when a party indulges in nomination trade.”For democracy, a strong opposition is needed. That’s why we wanted that there would be a good opposition, but the possibility to become such an opposition lessens when a party indulges in nomination trade,” she said. The prime minister said this while delivering her speech when a cross-section of people, including Bankers Association of Bangladesh (BAB) and FBCCI, greeted her at her official residence Ganobhaban by presenting bouquets to her for her party’s landslide victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections. She said it was very much regrettable that the attitude of the opposition was peculiar. “The way they gave their nominations was not for participating in the election. They just did business in the name of giving nominations,” she said.Sheikh Hasina mentioned that a person came to the Bangladesh mission in Dubai to submit his nomination paper when the mission officials informed him that he had to submit it to the respective returning officer or through online which made him angry.”The person told the mission officials that he gave so much money in London that they told him he could be able to submit his nomination paper even from Dubai. This is just an incident. There’re more incidents like this,” she said.About the BNP’s nominations to more than one person in most of the seats, the prime minister posed a question, “For what did they give more than nomination in one seat? What type of election will they do who can do this type of incident?”She also said she saw people’s desires for casting their votes in favour of Boat, the electoral symbol of Awami League, in the 11th general election like 1970 and 1973.Talking about the plans of her government in the next five years, Hasina said the people of the country will get homes, education, food, nutrition and treatment. “Their lives will be beautiful and developed, this is my expectations for the coming days,” she said.Expressing her deep gratitude towards the people of the country for keeping their trust and belief in her, the AL chief sought cooperation from all so that she could honour the trust and belief.
Gilberto Hinojosa, the chair of the Texas Democratic Party, warned party members during his speech Friday night that even though the family separation policy has been halted, the issue is not over.Hinojosa says detaining families at the border indefinitely – even if they are together – is still a problem.“Thousands of children have been split from their families,” he said. “Now a family separation crisis will be a family detention crisis. History will judge them.”But he told attendants history is watching them, too, and it’s up to the party to do something.“Our children and our grandchildren will judge all of us,” he says. “What did Texas do when children were being ripped away from their families at our border? What did Texas Democrats do to fight back?”But party members don’t have a unified answer on what they should do to fight back – or what their alternative plan for immigration should look like. The party’s platform has a fairly long list of priorities on immigration – like passage of the DREAM Act, shutting down detention centers and denouncing xenophobia.“We are a country of immigrants,” said Jesus Trinidad, a delegate from Seguin. “So, I believe that we should welcome immigrants as opposed to putting them in jail.”Trinidad says he’s been watching what was happening at the border in recent weeks. He says he has a lot of sympathy for immigrants fleeing violence in their countries, but he didn’t have any concrete policies in mind.“That’s a tough question,” says Sana Shahid, a delegate from Houston.Shahid says tackling immigration policy is complicated. For example, on the issue of prosecuting people who enter the U.S. without documentation, she has two views on this.“They should be given due process,” she says. “Because, yes, they are coming to our borders and they are seeking asylum. But even if they cross in, that’s a civil offense. We shouldn’t be prosecuting them criminally. The punishment doesn’t match the crime.”Many Democrats say they are concerned that immigrants are being criminally prosecuted, while also frustrated with how badly staffed those courts are.Eve Fox, a delegate from the Fort Worth area, said she thinks diplomacy is the answer.“Our governments need to be spending resources to work with these other countries’ governments,” Fox says. “We need to have a stronger relationship with Mexico, not try to push them away and create animosities.”Fox also says the government should focus on prosecuting people who employ undocumented workers, instead of only prosecuting workers. And even though there’s not a singular vision for an immigration plan, Democratic leaders say they should be leading on this issue.“As the Democratic party, we are called upon to reaffirm our best American values,” said state Sen. Jose Rodriguez of El Paso. “It is time to recommit ourselves to this ideal that all immigrants are welcome and should not be treated like criminals regardless of how they got here.” JULIA REIHS/Via KUTDelegates cheer during the Texas Democratic Convention in Fort Worth on Friday.Immigration took center stage at the Texas Democratic Party convention in Fort Worth last weekend. Delegates from across the state are concerned about the Trump administration policy that was separating families at the border until it was reversed last week. But the party didn’t exactly present a concrete platform to reform immigration or oppose the Trump administration’s hardline policies ahead of the November elections. New system discovered with five planets More information: Two Small Planets Transiting HD 3167, arXiv:1607.05248 [astro-ph.EP] arxiv.org/abs/1607.05248AbstractWe report the discovery of two super-Earth-sized planets transiting the bright (V = 8.94, K = 7.07) nearby late G-dwarf HD 3167, using data collected by the K2 mission. The inner planet, HD 3167 b, has a radius of 1.6 R_e and an ultra-short orbital period of only 0.96 days. The outer planet, HD 3167 c, has a radius of 2.9 R_e and orbits its host star every 29.85 days. At a distance of just 45.8 +/- 2.2 pc, HD 3167 is one of the closest and brightest stars hosting multiple transiting planets, making HD 3167 b and c well suited for follow-up observations. The star is chromospherically inactive and slowly rotating, ideal for radial velocity observations to measure the planets’ masses. The outer planet is large enough that it likely has a thick gaseous envelope which could be studied via transmission spectroscopy. Planets transiting bright, nearby stars like HD 3167 are valuable objects to study leading up to the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope. Although Kepler has lost two of its four reaction wheels and therefore cannot be precisely pointed toward stars, it is still capable of detecting new exoworlds. The spacecraft is now in its extended mission, known as K2, during which it has already found over 100 new planets. The HD 3167 system is just the latest addition to the vast collection of extrasolar worlds detected by K2.HD 3167 was observed by Kepler between January 3 and March 23, 2016 during Campaign 8 of its K2 mission. This observation campaign allowed a team of astronomers, led by Andrew Vanderburg of the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA), to detect two transit signals that could be planets circling around this nearby star.”We identified two planet candidates transiting HD 3167 after processing pixel-level data to produce a light curve, removing systematic effects due to Kepler’s unstable pointing, and searching for planets using a Box Least Squares periodogram search,” the researchers wrote in the paper. To confirm the planetary status of these candidates, the team conducted follow-up observations employing the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph (TRES) on the 1.5 m telescope at the Fred L. Whipple Observatory on Mt. Hopkins, Arizona and the Robo-AO adaptive optics system installed at the 2.1 m telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, also in Arizona. They also used statistical techniques to validate the planetary nature of the transiting signals. The confirmed exoplanets received designation HD 3167 b and HD 3167 c. With a radius of about 1.6 Earth radii, HD 3167 b is the inner planet, orbiting the host star in just slightly less than one day. The outer planet is nearly three times bigger in size than Earth and has an orbital period of approximately 30 days.HD 3167 could be an excellent target for further follow-up observations as it is one of the closest and brightest stars hosting multiple transiting planets. The scientists noted that this system is highly suitable for precise radial velocity observations to measure the planets’ masses.”If HD 3167 b is rocky with a mass of about four Earth masses, it should induce radial velocity variations with a semiamplitude of about 3 ms−1. Depending on its composition, HD 3167 c could induce radial velocity variations with a semiamplitude of anywhere between 1 ms−1 and 3 ms−1. These signals should be readily detectable with modern spectrographs,” the paper reads. The team also emphasized that the outer planet is one of the best currently known small planets for atmospheric characterization with transit transmission spectroscopy. However, they also noted that the short period of HD 3167 b makes it likely that spectroscopic observations of HD 3167 c’s atmosphere might overlap with a transit of the inner planet.”This could be an efficient way to rule out a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere for HD 3167 b. Observers should be cautious, however, to ensure that a transit of HD 3167 b not interfere with out-of-transit observations necessary for calibration,” the researchers concluded.
Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress observed ‘black day’ in districts and blocks across the state on Saturday to protest against the “detention and manhandling” of its leaders in Assam’s Silchar airport, where they had gone to assess the situation after the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protest will continue on Sunday too. Carrying placards and sporting black masks and badges, TMC activists shouted slogans against the BJP governments at the Centre and Assam and the final draft of the NRC. Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeChief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had alleged that the members of the delegation, including women, were manhandled at the airport and accused the BJP of imposing a “super emergency” in the country. TMC Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee had said, “What happened to our party delegation is not only shameful but also undemocratic. Our slogan will be ‘we don’t need this monstrous government any more’.”At Englishbazar, Malda, BJP workers attacked Trinamool Congress supporters who were participating in a rally. The BJP workers demanded that the NRC should start in Bengal, too, and that those whose names would be in the list should be deported to Bangladesh. A large police contingent went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury said that the BJP was trying to create chaos in different parts in the district. “Trinamool Congress supporters had taken part in a rally and the BJP workers attacked them without any provocation.”In Kolkata, an effigy of PM Narendra Modi was burnt by TMC supporters at a rally led by minister Subrata Mukherjee. “Those whose names have been dropped from NRC are panicking and really do not know what to do. The BJP is ruining the country with its divisive politics,” said Mukherjee.
