Solis appointed to global warming panel

first_img“She has co-sponsored legislation with congressman \ Waxman, that sets greenhouse gas emission targets that aim to keep temperatures below the danger point,” Mel ndez said, adding the bill achieves these targets through a “flexible economy wide cap and trade program for greenhouse gas emissions.” But reaching agreement on the issue could be difficult. Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora, was among the 150 Republicans opposing the formation of the committee. Many said the panel was unnecessary and that its budget could be better used elsewhere. Dreier’s representatives did not return e-mails seeking comment. fred.ortega@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2306 House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, named El Monte Democrat Hilda Solis Friday to a newly formed House committee on global warming. The House of Representatives voted 269-150 Thursday to create the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, with 44 Republicans crossing the aisle to support the formation of the committee. Solis joins eight Democrats and six Republicans on the panel, which will not be able to write legislation and will disband after two years. The committee has been tasked to make recommendations on legislation to combat global warming, which could include mandatory caps on so-called greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide and methane. President Bush has argued against such caps, arguing that such a move would cause the U.S. economic harm. Solis was traveling back to California from Washington on Friday and could not be reached for comment. But her spokeswoman Sonia Mel ndez said the congresswoman does support some caps on emissions. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
