first_img (SUB DECK) Popular series gets under way on March 9 Welterweight boxers will be in the spotlight this year when the very popular Wray and Nephew 2016 Contender boxing series kicks off on Wednesday, March 9, at the Chinese Benevolent Association auditorium on Hope Road in St Andrew. The series, which started in 2011 and alternates between middleweight and welterweight boxers each year, is a made-for-television production that is sanctioned by the Jamaica Boxing Board.  It will be broadcast live each week on Television Jamaica (TVJ) at 9 p.m. and will see 16 boxers drawn from the Caribbean and the United States vying for top honours. The first prize is one million dollars. The team concept will again be used this year, with one team of eight boxers being designated Green and the other eight-man team Yellow. One boxer from each team will go up against a boxer from the opposing team every week in the preliminary rounds. At the quarter final stage, the eight boxers left in the competition will be seeded and a draw will take place to decide on the matchup each week. There will be eight preliminary bouts, four quarter-final fights, the two semi-finals and then the finals. There will also be two amateur bouts each night. There will be an official launch on Thursday this week, at which the promoters will give the details of the format that will be followed this year, the names of the boxers on the two teams and the total prize money that will be paid out to the boxers. The Caribbean team will have boxers from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Barbados and will be a mixture of new talent and tried and proven crowd favourites. Previous winners were in 2011, middleweight boxer Ricardo Smith; 2012, welterweight Donovan “Police” Campbell; 2013 middleweight Devon Moncriffe; 2014 welterweight Sakima Mullings; and 2015 middleweight Kemahl Russell. Cloud Computing Security: What The Big Guns Have In Store

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting The RSA Conference is the event for news to spill over with talk about cloud computing security.Let’s take a look at some of the announcements from the major players in the market, including Intel, Novell and Cisco.Intel, RSA, VMware and the Trusted ServerAccording to Dark Reading, the companies demonstrated a proof-of-concept for “building security into the cloud computing infrastructure.”The companies are playing on the white listing concept, which has gained wider acceptance in the security world. The idea being that if a server is trusted or white listed then it will be far less vulnerable to malware attacks:“At the heart of the PoC is a hardware “root of trust,” which uses Intel’s Trusted Execution Technology (TXT), which authenticates each step in the boot process of a system, verifying the hardware configuration, initializing the BIOS, and launching the hypervisor. It basically ensures physical and virtual environments aren’t tampered via malware or other malicious activity. Intel’s upcoming “Westmere” processor, which will be announced in two weeks, will support this capability, says Kirk Skaugen, vice president of the architecture group and general manager of the data center group at Intel.”Novell and the Cloud Security AllianceNovell is teaming up with the Cloud Security Alliance to push standards for cloud computing. The effort is called the “Trusted Cloud Intiiative.” According to Information Week, Novel will develop standards for cloud security, compliance, identity management and other related issues.Cloud computing is essentially a world with no standards whatsoever. Everyone has different meanings for the fundamental aspects that are a part of cloud computing. That leaves the customer with little way to fully understand what they are committing to with a cloud vendor. In its second year, The Cloud Security Alliance consists of technology companies seeking to develop use cases about the processes and practices around cloud computing security.Cisco: Developing Mobile Phone SecurityCisco is developing an “always on” security system for mobile devices. 4 promising open source projects for 2018

first_imgThis year has been a year of massive growth in open source. While almost any developer knows frameworks such as React and projects like Docker (moby), in 2017 the number of open source projects on GitHub grew from around 35 million to over 62 million.See also: Is IoT all about low-tech and simple APIsAs open source is expected to continue to grow and standardize more development fields, here is a short preview of some of the most promising candidates to rise in 2018. Most of them were built around the growing realization that the age of components has just begun and that applications in 2018 will be built using encapsulated, composable and styled components as building blocks – which should be easily shared and used in our different applications.1. VueAlthough already widely known and very buzzy, Vue is increasing in adoption in the community and organizations and might very well become an even competitor for frameworks such as React in 2018. It is a library for building interactive web interfaces and provides a simple, flexible API for its data-reactive components. It has a simple, minimal core with an incrementally adoptable stack that can handle apps of any scale. It’s lightweight, simplicity and community adoption position it as one of the most promising candidates for massive growth in 2018.2. BitBit is an extension for your Git repositories that enables you to share parts from their existing source-code and natively integrate them into other repos, without having to set up and maintain additional repositories/packages.Any subset of files from your Git repo can be easily tracked and shared as a reusable component, creating a playlist-like collection of components to be used by different team members and projects. You and your team can share and discover components, collaborate, get updates and stay in sync.3. Styled ComponentsWith over 10k stars in just a few months (and keeps gaining popularity), this project allows you to write actual CSS code to style your components. It also removes the mapping between components and styles, so using components as a low-level styling construct becomes very simple. This is nothing less than a milestone in the upcoming future of styling components.4. Apollo GraphQL (with React)Apollo is a A fully-featured, production-ready caching GraphQL client for every server or UI frameworkReact-Apollo is a convenient yet powerful way to bind GraphQL queries to your React components so that you can focus on developing your UI while data fetching and management get out of the way. At the same time, it has all of the hooks and extension points for you to be fully in control. US service firms grew at slower pace in December

first_imgWASHINGTON — U.S. service firms grew at a slower pace in December, a possible indication that various headwinds from turbulent markets to trade tensions could be having an impact on economic activity. The Institute for Supply Management, which is composed of purchasing managers, says that its service index fell to 57.6 per cent last month, down from a November reading of 60.7 per cent.Any reading above 50 signals growth. So even with the December decline, the index shows that service industries, where most Americans work, has been expanding for 107 consecutive months. The weaker reading on the service economy followed a report last week that the ISM index for manufacturing slowed to the slowest pace in more than two years, with some manufacturers complaining about the impact of President Donald Trump’s trade policies.Martin Crutsinger, The Associated Presslast_img read more

Housing prices up 7 sales down 28 supply dips 64 in last

first_imgNew Delhi: Housing prices rose by a modest 7 per cent in seven major cities during the past five years, while sales and new supply have declined 28 per cent and 64 per cent, respectively, according to brokerage firm Anarock. In its analysis of the performance of the real estate sector in the past five years of the current central government, Anarock founder and Chairman Anuj Puri said many steps were taken to reform and improve the image of the Indian real estate sector. Measures such as demonetisation, new realty law RERA and GST did cause some pain for the sector in short term but would prove beneficial in the long run, he added. On operation performance of the housing segment, Puri said the prices in primary markets have seen more of a “time correction” rather than a price correction, with average prices across top-seven cities seeing a meagre 7 per cent increase in the past five years. “Considering inflation (assuming seven per cent a year), all cities will have seen negative price trends in the last five years,” he added. These seven cities are Delhi-NCR, Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. The supply of new housing units reduced by 64 per cent in the past five years from 5.45 lakh units in 2014 to 1.95 lakh units in 2018. Housing sales were also slow, dropping by 28 per cent during the same period from 3.43 lakh units in 2014 to 2.48 units last year. “Like it or lump it, but (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi’s victory in 2014 ushered a new era in Indian real estate starkly marked by his vision to set the ‘house’ in order and alter the scarred face of an unorganised sector beset by unscrupulous activities,” Puri said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi “tightened the Centre’s grip on real estate previously the largest dump-yard for black money hoarders and introduced big-bang schemes to benefit consumers”, he said. Puri said the government set the stage for the real estate sector in the long term through major policy overhauls and initiatives like 100 smart cities and Housing For All by 2022. The chairman of Anarock said demonetisation, realty law RERA and the GST brought about a paradigm shift in the way the Indian real estate does business and laid the groundwork for improved transparency and efficiency in the sector. “The measures he took to achieve this did have short-term negative impacts, but nobody can argue that this is a case where short-term pain is necessary for the sake of long-term gain,” he added. However, Puri felt that the on-ground implementation for most of these initiatives could have been better to achieve more even in these five years.last_img read more

Giraffe of the Mesozoic Discovered

first_img Citation: ‘Giraffe of the Mesozoic’ Discovered (2009, September 8) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-09-giraffe-mesozoic.html Explore further Aussie museum displays huge dinosaur bones (PhysOrg.com) — A creature dubbed a “Giraffe of the Mesozoic” has been discovered in China. The animal, with its giraffe-like long neck and long forelimbs is the first well-preserved Early Cretaceous brachiosaurid dinosaur to be discovered in Asia. It lived about 100 million years ago.center_img This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. Brachiosaurs were herbivorous dinosaurs belonging to the sauropod family, but in comparison to some brachiosaurs, the new species, Qiaowanlong kangxii, is quite small, at only around 10 feet tall and close to 40 feet long. It weighed a mere 10 tons. The new brachiosaur specimen was described by authors Hai-Lu You and Da-Qing Li, in a paper published online on 4 September 2009, in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The brachiosaur was given the scientific name Qiaowanlong kangxii from Qiao (bridge), wan (bend in a stream), long (dragon), in reference to the area where it was found, and Kangxi, a Qing Dynasty Emperor who is supposed to have dreamt about the scenic Qiaowan region. The specimen was found in the Yujingzi Basin in Gansu Province in North West China, at an excavation site in which many other dinosaur fossils have been found in recent years, including at least three new species.Earlier studies into sauropods suggested the animals held their necks straight out, and swung them from side to side, rather like a metal detector, but the Chinese scientists found the brachiosaur skeleton had a similar bifurcated (two-part) spine to those in other sauropods, but not previously found in brachiosaurs. The bifurcated spine and the structure of the other bones discovered, including a unique pelvis, suggest the neck “should have been held aloft, with a more vertical than horizontal behavior,” according to Hai-Lu You. Having long forelimbs and a long neck held aloft, would have made it look a little like today’s giraffes, and like them, the brachiosaur would have grazed vegetation high above the reach of its competitors for food.Sauropods were thought to have been most populous in the Jurassic in Africa and North America, but some paleontologists have theorized their population declined rapidly early in the Cretaceous period. The new finding casts doubt on this theory, since a growing number of Early Cretaceous sauropods is being discovered in China.Dr Jerry Harris, Dixie State College’s Director of Paleontology, who worked with the Chinese scientists, explained that what makes the discovery so important is how it adds to our knowledge about how dinosaur populations could move around the globe in the Early Cretaceous period. Land bridges between the continents were vanishing at this time, but as the new brachiosaur has similarities to dinosaur remains found in North America, Harris suggests some connections did still exist if only sporadically. The dinosaurs took advantage of the land bridges to move around, which explains why Chinese and American brachiosaurs appear to be closely related.More information: The first well-preserved Early Cretaceous brachiosaurid dinosaur in Asia; Hai-Lu You, Da-Qing Li; Proceedings of the Royal Society B; doi: 10.1098/rspb.2009.1278© 2009 PhysOrg.comlast_img read more
