When Batesville and East Central played their varsity boys and girls double header last Saturday night, both games were broadcast on WRBI. The big difference in broadcasting these days is that two sets of broadcasters were involved. Jack Smith led the boys’ broadcast and Thomas Barnett led the girls’ broadcast. When I started doing play-by-play, I would do reserve and varsity boys games on the same night. This is no longer done. Only varsity games are broadcast these days. I remember how hard it was to sit through both games. It was never easy to get to a bathroom if you needed one. Time and location was always a factor.I am sure that the reason for no reserve game broadcast any more is the lack of available sponsors. The cost of broadcast time in the old days was much lower. Last Saturday night, both games were available because there are different sponsors for the boys and girls. If you are a shut-in or don’t like to travel at night, it is great that WRBI still brings you the varsity games. Not every school or town has this luxury any more.
